About me

A few tidbits for new visitors:

  • I’m a 37 year old widower
  • My wife, Anna, died this past summer (2006) from lung cancer. She was a 44 year old woman who exercised pretty much daily and never smoked a cigarette in her life
  • Anna’s maiden name was Fairchild and my family name is Dunne. We combined them shortly after we were married (Dunne + Fairchild = Dufair)
  • I have 3 kids whom I enjoy and enjoy raising immensely
  • I’m a big music fan and sometime musician. I’ll try and post some of my recordings soon. You can see what I’m listening to below. My tastes encompass nearly anything that’s not country, classical, and jazz. The two latter, I hope to add as my tastes, uh, mature. I wouldn’t say I’m a great musician, but I love doing it and my playing is usually decent, occasionally somewhat better than that
  • I’m from the suburbs of Chicago. I still have a lot of family there
  • I like computers. I started programming them at about 9 years old, when my mom went back to school and got her computer science degree. I like dynamic languages like Smalltalk and Scheme. I’ve done a lot of production code in Smalltalk and some research code in Scheme. I’ve also worked in more than a dozen other languages in production and another dozen or so perhaps in personal projects. I wouldn’t say I’m a great hacker, but I love doing it and my code is usually decent, occasionally somewhat better than that
  • I love to cook. I watch the Food Network obsessively, especially Good Eats. I wouldn’t say I’m a great cook, but I love doing it and my food is usually decent, occasionally somewhat better than that
  • I was raised Roman Catholic. I’m now a Unitarian Universalist. Anna and I were married in a UU church near Chicago. I raise my kids proudly as UUs
  • I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD. I treat it with behavior mods currently
  • I’ve had a few episodes of acute major depression. Thank God for SSRIs - they’ve helped me several times
  • I speak Spanish at a conversational level and have a pretty convincing accent
  • I’ve been working part time since Anna died. Suits me quite well at this point. Thank God I can afford it
  • Jase at the park This is about what I look like.

Here’s my “VisualDNA” - a kind of fun way of describing some of my tastes in pictures:
