Last week, coming home from Girl Scout Camp:
Alyssa: I can’t wait until Ian and Emma are out of the house. They annoy me.
Me: Sweetie, you’ll be off to college long before they are out of the house.
Alyssa: I’m going to stay and live with you in college, dad.
(Wouldn’t that be great? Even at 9, I’m already worried about my kids being gone. Perhaps that’ll change after a few teenage years)
Me: That’s fine, but I’ll be in Tibet, chanting with the buddhist monks once you and your siblings are done with high school.
Alyssa: No problem. I’ll stay home and take care of the house
Me: Don’t you want to come to Tibet with me?
Alyssa: No. I’m not up for all that “Om Mane Padme”

“Wouldn’t that be great? Even at 9, I’m already worried about my kids being gone.”
It’s so nice to read that–why does everyone look forward to kicking their kids out of the house? I don’t want my kids to move away–I wanna keep them! Steve, especially, ties me in knots with his talk of California and Europe, wanting to travel and “get out of here.”
I don’t want him to go away to college. And it’s only a year away.
Of course, all of the other kids are like, “get him out of here!” Bill talks about having his own room, and Jack talks about moving out of Mark’s room and in with Bill.
(sigh)–guess we’re going to visit a few colleges when I’m off in July.

jase - that story cracked me up. she’s such a smart kid.
i was very eager to get out of my parents house after high school. i did a volunteer job an hour away from my parents but returned every weekend to see them and my old friends. then, before university, i had to move back in with them for a few months. my mother, who had had some problems seeing me move out, got to see the situation with new eyes: she said it felt like having some overgrown baby bird in the nest, scrabbling around. i think she was quite glad when i moved out again.

max insists that not only is he going to live here forever, but his two children are going to live here, too…..when i ask about his wife, though, he seems to be confused….
if only they could live with us forever!

Hi Jason!
Came across your blog after seeing comments you’ve left on Kate’s (sweet/salty) page, which were so moving and heartfelt. Have spent the last hour or so perusing your archives, looking at pictures, learning about Anna and your beautiful kids.
Just wanted to say how touching and deeply felt this site is. Such a tribute to the lovely woman with whom you’ve built your family, and a such a loving document you are creating for your children. It’s touched my heart.
Warmly, Sarah
